Website Theme Tailoring

Your brand should be as good as what you have built.

Sunlit forest with tall pine trees and rolling hills in the background during golden hour.

Every website template begins as the same thing: a well-designed structure built to work for everyone, which means it is not yet right for anyone. When a visitor arrives at a template in its default state — or a template that has only been partially adapted — they notice, even if they cannot say why. Something feels generic. Something feels borrowed. The brand is there, but it is sitting on top of the design rather than inside it.

Website Theme Tailoring is the transformation that closes that gap. We take your existing template — on Webflow, Squarespace, Shopify, WordPress, or your preferred platform — and apply your brand identity with the precision and depth that makes the distinction between a site that looks templated and a site that looks like it was built for you specifically. Same structure. Entirely different presence.

Our Approach

A great tailor does not change the suit. They make it yours.

A template is like a well-cut garment from a quality manufacturer. The construction is sound, the structure is right, and everything is proportioned correctly. But it was made to fit the average — not you. In its original form it fits, but it does not feel like yours. A skilled tailor changes that. The adjustment of every seam, the proportion of every detail, until the garment moves the way you move and no one who sees you in it knows it began as something mass-produced.

That is what this service does to a website. We do not rebuild your template from the ground up. We work within its structure and transform the visual layer — the colour system, the typography, the imagery treatment, the spacing, the graphic elements, the way your brand's character is expressed across every section — until the site feels like it was made for your brand specifically. Not adapted. Inhabited.

“The goal is that no visitor who lands on your site should be able to tell where the template ends and your brand begins.”

What's included

Brand applied at every level. Nothing left to chance.

Website Theme Tailoring is not a surface reskin — changing the colours and swapping in your logo. It is a comprehensive brand application process that examines every visual element on every page of your template and applies a consistent design intelligence across all of it.

Brand audit and design direction
We begin by reviewing your existing brand identity — your logo, colour palette, typography, visual language, guidelines, and any existing brand materials — in full. If your brand identity is not yet fully defined, we establish the visual direction as part of this phase. From this audit we produce a clear design direction document that guides every decision that follows: how your colours will be applied across the template, which typefaces will be used and how, what the imagery treatment will be, and how the overall visual character of the brand will be expressed across the site.
Colour system implementation
Your brand's colour palette applied across the full template — backgrounds, typography, buttons, links, borders, hover states, and graphic elements — with a logic that makes every colour choice feel intentional. Not just 'brand purple for buttons and white for backgrounds' but a considered hierarchy that uses colour to guide attention, establish visual rhythm, and make the site feel coherent from every angle.
Typography system
Your brand typefaces applied correctly across every typographic element on the site: headline hierarchy, body copy, captions, labels, button text, navigation. Typography application is one of the most common failure points in template adaptation — the right typefaces used at the wrong weights, scales, or spacing can make a site feel technically branded but visually inconsistent. We apply the full typographic system with precision.
Imagery direction and art direction
A clear direction for the photography, illustration, and imagery that will populate your site — including the style, subject matter, colour treatment, and compositional approach that aligns with your brand. For sites using stock photography, we provide a curated direction guide and selection criteria. For sites using custom photography or illustration, we provide art direction that ensures consistency across all visual content.
Layout and component refinement
The spacing, proportions, and layout logic across your template's components — section padding, card layouts, grid structures, button sizes, form treatments — reviewed and adjusted to reflect your brand's character. A luxury brand needs different spatial decisions than a high-energy consumer brand. We apply the visual logic appropriate to your brand's register, not the template's default assumptions.
Graphic elements and brand expression
Custom graphic elements layered into the template to express your brand's visual language beyond what colour and typography alone can achieve: pattern applications, divider treatments, icon direction, texture, illustration accents, or decorative elements appropriate to your brand's world. These are the details that make a template feel inhabited rather than adapted — and that experienced eyes notice immediately.
Page-by-page design review
A comprehensive review of every page or page template in your site — homepage, inner pages, product or service pages, blog layout, contact page — to ensure the brand application is consistent across all contexts and that no page still reads as default template. Consistency across the full site is what separates a brand-faithful result from a home page that looks great and inner pages that do not.
Style guide and implementation notes
A design style guide documenting all the decisions made during the tailoring process: colour hex values and usage rules, typeface and scale specifications, spacing logic, component styling, and image direction. This guide enables your developer or platform to implement the design accurately — and gives your team a reference to maintain brand consistency in any future site updates.
design versus development

We design the brand layer. You or your developer implement it.

Website Theme Tailoring is a design service. We produce the complete design direction and visual specifications for your tailored template — style guides, annotated design files, and implementation notes — but we do not implement the changes directly in your CMS or website platform.

For most template platforms, implementation is accessible without specialist development knowledge: Squarespace, Wix, and similar platforms are designed to be edited directly by non-developers, and we can produce guidance that enables you or your team to apply the design accurately. For more complex implementations — custom Webflow builds, Shopify theme code, WordPress with custom CSS — a developer may be needed to implement fully. If you do not have a developer relationship, we can recommend trusted partners.

What this means for you: you receive a complete, thoroughly documented design system that makes implementation as clear and efficient as possible — regardless of who does it.

the process

Four stages. Two to three weeks.

We begin by reviewing your brand identity and understanding which materials your team produces most frequently. The kit is built from that specific inventory — not a generic suite, but the templates your business actually needs.

 Book a call
01  Brand review and design direction
We begin by thoroughly reviewing your brand identity — logo, colour palette, typography, visual language, any existing guidelines. We also review your chosen template in full: its structure, its default styling, its constraints, and its opportunities. From this dual review we produce a design direction document — how the brand will be expressed across the template's visual system — which you review and confirm before any design work begins. This step prevents the most common failure in template adaptation: applying brand elements without a coherent visual logic to govern how they interact.
02 UX review and navigation optimisation
Before visual design begins, we assess the user experience logic of your template layout: the navigation structure, the information hierarchy across key pages, the placement and clarity of calls to action, and the overall visitor journey through the site. We do not rebuild the template's architecture — but we flag any UX issues and recommend adjustments that will make the visitor experience coherent and purposeful before the visual layer is applied. Good design applied to a confused structure produces a site that looks good and still performs poorly.
03 Full brand application and design
The complete visual brand application across every element of your template: colour system, typography, imagery direction, graphic elements, layout refinements, component styling. You receive a design review at the completion of the primary pages (homepage and one or two key inner pages) and provide consolidated feedback before we complete the remaining pages and components. Final output: a complete style guide, annotated design specifications, and implementation notes for every visual decision made.
04 Delivery and implementation guidance
All design files, style guides, and implementation notes are packaged and delivered. We include a walkthrough — either a brief call or a recorded explanation — of the design decisions made and how to implement each element in your specific platform. For the two weeks following delivery, we are available to answer implementation questions from you or your developer at no additional charge.

Questions we hear often.

Which website platforms do you work with?

We work with all major template-based website platforms: Webflow, Squarespace, Shopify, WordPress (with a theme or page builder), Wix, Showit, and similar. Each platform has different design capabilities and constraints, and we design within the specific reality of your platform rather than producing a direction that cannot be implemented. Tell us your platform at the brief stage and we will confirm compatibility before we begin.

Do I need to have my brand identity finalised before we start?

How quickly can we get started?

Onboarding typically takes three to five business days. We use that time to brief the team on your brand, set up your project dashboard, align on turnaround expectations, and confirm your first month's priorities. Most clients have work in production within the first week.

Who will I be working with?

You have a dedicated project manager as your primary point of contact, and a consistent creative team assigned to your account. The same people work your projects month after month. You are not handed off to whoever is available — your team learns your brand and your standards, and that knowledge carries forward into every deliverable.
